Backwashing your pool sand filter is an essential maintenance task that helps keep your pool water clean and clear. Here are the steps to backwash your pool sand filter:

  1. Turn off your pool pump: Before beginning the backwashing process, turn off your pool pump. This will prevent any debris from getting back into your pool during the process.

  2. Switch the filter valve to “backwash”: Locate the multiport valve on the filter and turn it to the “backwash” position. This will reverse the water flow through the filter, allowing it to flush out any debris and contaminants that have been trapped in the sand.

  3. Turn on your pump: Turn on your pool pump and let it run for 2-3 minutes or until the water in the sight glass or waste pipe runs clear. This will indicate that most of the dirt and debris has been removed from the sand filter.

  4. Rinse the filter: Turn off the pump again, and set the multiport valve to the “rinse” position. This will send clean water through the filter and flush out any remaining debris.

  5. Turn on the pump and rinse for 1-2 minutes: Turn on the pump again and let it run for 1-2 minutes to complete the rinse cycle.

  6. Turn off the pump: Turn off the pump and set the multiport valve back to the “filter” position.

  7. Turn on the pump: Turn on the pump and enjoy your clean, clear pool!

It is recommended to backwash your pool sand filter every 1-2 weeks, depending on the frequency of pool use and the level of debris in your pool. If your pool water is still cloudy after backwashing, you may need to clean your filter more frequently or check the chemistry.
